Multifractal structure of the large-scale heliospheric magnetic field strength fluctuations near 85 AU

چکیده

During 2002, the Voyager 1 spacecraft was in the heliosphere between 83.4 and 85.9 AU (1 AU is the mean distance from the Sun to Earth) at 34 N heliographic latitude. The magnetic field strength profile observed in this region had a multifractal structure in the range of scales from 2 to 16 days. The multifractal spectrum observed near 85 AU is similar to that observed near 40 AU, indicating relatively little evolution of the multifractal structure of the magnetic field with increasing distance in the distant heliosphere in the epoch near solar maximum.

Voyager 2 observation of the multifractal spectrum in the heliosphere and the heliosheath

We look in detail at the multifractal scaling of the fluctuations in the interplanetary magnetic field strength as measured onboard Voyager 2 in the entire heliosphere and even in the heliosheath. More specifically, we analyse the spectra observed by Voyager 2 in a wide range of solar activity cycles during the years 1980–2009 at various heliospheric latitudes and distances from 6 to 90 astrono...

Search for the heliosheath with Voyager 1 magnetic field measurements

[1] The magnetic field measured by Voyager 1 (V1) near 85 AU from 2002.0 to 2003.17 has the expected properties for the heliospheric magnetic field at that distance and epoch of the solar cycle. These V1 magnetic field observations do not provide evidence for exit from the solar wind, entry into a subsonic region such as the heliosheath, or transit of the termination shock near 85 AU.

Search for the Heliospheric Termination Shock (TS) and Heliosheath (HS)

Voyager 1 continues to measure the very distant Heliospheric Magnetic Field (HMF) beyond 95 AU at ~35 North latitude. The MAG instrument data covers more than a full 22 years solar magnetic cycle. The magnitude of the observed HMF is well described, on average, by Parker's Archimedean spiral structure if due account is made for time variations of the source field strength and solar wind velocit...

Merged interaction regions at 1 AU

[1] We discuss the existence of large, complex merged interaction regions (MIRs) in the solar wind near Earth. MIRs can have configurations that cause more prolonged geomagnetic effects than a single flow structure. A MIR or successive MIRs can produce relatively long lasting Forbush decreases at 1 AU. We illustrate MIRs at 1 AU with two examples (MIR-1 and MIR-2) seen by WIND and ACE in the in...

Evolution of Magnetic Fields in Corotating Interaction Regions from 1 to 95 Au: Order to Chaos

We discuss the large-scale heliospheric magnetic field strength fluctuations as a function of distance from the Sun during the declining phase of a solar cycle, based on a one-dimensional, MHD, three-fluid model with observations made at 1 AU during 1995 as input. We consider daily averages of the magnetic field strength, B, as a function of time for a 1 year interval. The model predicts that B...
